Child Food Insecurity Statistics

Research has shown that children are particularly vulnerable to the effects of food insecurity because even mild undernutrition can have adverse impacts on behavior, school performance, and cognitive development.
In partnership with the ConAgra Foods Foundation, we determined just how many children are vulnerable to the debilitating effects of hunger in every state. We worked to create state-level estimates on the number and prevalence of child food insecurity using existing data.
This information fills a critical gap in our understanding of states with high and disproportionate need as well as aid anti-hunger activists and elected officials become more informed about the children within their own states who are at risk of hunger.
