America's Second Harvest Names Kellogg Company Donor of the Year; Company Honored for Strong, Innovative Commitment to Ending Hunger
CHICAGO --- October 31, 2005 --- America's Second Harvest &emdash; The Nation's
Food Bank Network today presented Kellogg Company with their Donor of the Year
Award.
Kellogg was recognized for its
frequent donations of truckloads of product to America's Second Harvest Member
food banks throughout the country, as well as its history of providing direct
financial support to the nation's largest domestic hunger-relief
organization.
After Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans and the Gulf Coast in September of this year, Kellogg was one of the first donors to volunteer emergency food supplies. Kellogg provided "hand-held" snacks, which were urgently needed in the early days of the crisis when thousands of hurricane victims and evacuees did not have access to refrigeration or cooking equipment. The company also donated other food items that were specifically requested by America's Second Harvest.
"Kellogg is one of our top national donors. They have demonstrated a genuine commitment to helping us feed the thousands of people in this country who are hungry or at-risk of hunger," said Robert Forney, president and CEO of America's Second Harvest. "They have worked very hard to find new and innovative ways to channel additional products to our Network of Food Banks, and their donations significantly increased this year."
Further demonstrating their commitment to helping the nation's hungry, both retired and present Kellogg employees have volunteered at the Food Bank in Battle Creek, Mich., where Kellogg is based.
"We could not accomplish the important work that we do without the commitment of companies like Kellogg," said Forney. "Their contributions of food, funds and volunteers set an impressive benchmark that should be an inspiration to every other corporation in the country."
The Donor of the Year
Award was presented to Jeff Montie, Kellogg Company executive vice president and
Kellogg North America president, by Michael Halligan, senior vice president of
food sourcing and logistics for America's Second Harvest.
