AMERICA'S SECOND HARVEST WELCOMES BILL MCGOWAN AS CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER AND GEORGE BRALEY AS SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT OF GOVERNMENT RELATIONS AND PUBLIC POLICY

 

CHICAGO --- July 13, 2007 --- America’s Second Harvest—The Nation’s Food Bank Network has named William “Bill” McGowan Chief Operating Officer and George Braley Senior Vice President of Government Relations and Public Policy.

The hiring of McGowan and Braley puts America’s Second Harvest, the nation’s leading hunger-relief organization, in a position to maximize the effectiveness of its operations and to further its public policy agenda.

Bill McGowan has worked extensively in logistics, supply chain management, and strategic planning in the food manufacturing and retail businesses. He most recently held the position of President and COO at Flying Good Group, a private fresh food manufacturer. At Flying Food Group, he headed the senior leadership team overseeing the company’s $245 million operations and 2,800 employees. Prior to his tenure at Flying Food Group, Bill McGowan worked at Quaker Oats, Field Container Corporation and Barilla America in senior operations and marketing management positions.

George Braley currently serves as the Associate Administrator of the Food Nutrition Service (FNS) at the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) with 35 years of experience. Before taking on his current role at the USDA, Braley held a variety of positions within the FNS including Deputy Administrator for Special Nutrition Programs, where he managed the Child Nutrition program, the Food Distribution program, and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).

The hiring of Bill McGowan and George Braley accompanies other important administrative changes at America’s Second Harvest—the Nation’s Food Bank Network.

Carol Garrity Komon has been promoted from Director of Field Services to Vice President of Field Services, her fourth position at America’s Second Harvest. She has worked at the organization for 14 years, making her the longest-tenured employee in the Field Services Department. She holds a bachelor of science degree in marketing from Northern Illinois University and a master of business administration degree and certificate in nonprofit management from DePaul University.

Karen Paciero Spuhler has been promoted from Director of Individual Philanthropy to Vice President of Individual Philanthropy after 19 months with the organization. Karen previously worked as a regional director at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Boston and at Starfish Family Services, an agency of the Gleaners Community Food Bank in Detroit. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice and a master of arts degree in social work from the University of Michigan.

Archie Mack has joined America’s Second Harvest as Vice President of Marketing. He joins the organization after a 15-year career in the consumer products brand management field. He has bachelor of science and master of business administration degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
